Mini-Grants Have Major Impact

Each year VHC awards small grants that make a big difference for literacy. Recent mini-grants include those below. Verizon’s Check Into Literacy program funds this program.

2005 Grants

  • Castleton Area Childcare Providers ~ to bring together childcare providers and families to build literacy skills. Participants received books.
  • Child Care Providers' Network of Rutland ~ for books for a tote bag for child care providers to use for early literacy skills.
  • Fletcher Free Library, Burlington ~ for books for A Long Journey book discussion series, which offers immigrants and refugees an opportunity to practice English with English as a Second Language students from the Community College of Vermont.
  • Lamoille Valley Success By Six, Morrisville ~ for a newsletter with literacy tips, professional opportunities, and book suggestions for parents and childcare providers.
  • North Country Union Jr. High, Derby ~ for books for a read-at-home project where 7th and 8th graders read books with their families, have discussions, and attend an author visit.

2004 Grants

  • The Family Place, Norwich ~ for teen parent book bags.
  • Joe Houston Eagle Project, Peoples Academy, Morissville ~ for a graphic novels reading and discussion program to develop literacy skills for at-risk middle school students.
  • Montgomery Success By Six ~ for books for parents to take home for their children after participating in monthly reading activities at the library.
  • St. Johnsbury Pediatrics ~ for the purchase of books to give to families with young children.
  • Swanton/Highgate Success By Six ~ for books for their family reading program. Each family receives a book every month.
  • Vermont Reading Partners, Killington ~ for books for mentors to use with students in an after-school program.
  • Vermont Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences, Rutland ~ for books awarded at their annual conference entitled "Strenghthening Families through Literacy."

2003 Grants

  • Chittenden County Vermont Adult Learning ~ for a Black History Month reading series. Students discussed the origins of hatred and reflected on their own prejudices.
  • Edmunds Middle School ~ for guest speakers on the Underground Railroad at a Humanities Camp for at-risk middle school students.
  • First Congregational Church of St. Albans ~ for an Underground Railroad program for Vermont Adult Learning and school students.
  • Greensboro Wonder and Wisdom ~ for books for a children’s Hidden Treasures Summer Reading Challenge.
  • Millers Run School ~ for a lecture and a field trip to the Old Stone House for at-risk middle school students.
  • Milton Elementary School ~ for a field trip to the Ethan Allen Homestead for at-risk middle school students.
  • Northeast Kingdom Early Head Start ~ for early literacy trainings for home visitors who teach parents how to share books with children.
  • Northfield and Roxbury Success by Six ~ to purchase children’s books for a Family Reading Program geared toward parents receiving services from Central Vermont Adult Basic Education or Head Start.
  • Waits River Valley School ~ for cameras and film to enhance a literacy project around the biography and art of photographer Dorothea Lange.
